Wind Waker GameCube Version Coming To Switch 2

Wind Waker HD Switch 2 Port is Still

Excitement is building as Nintendo announced during the April 2 Nintendo Direct for Switch 2 that the GameCube version of Wind Waker will be making its way to the new console. This news sparked curiosity about the fate of Wind Waker HD on the next-gen platform.

Nintendo of America Senior Vice President of Product Development, Nate Bihldorff, addressed these concerns in a recent conversation. In an episode of Kinda Funny Games Daily on April 9, host Tim Gettys shared insights from his discussion with Bihldorff at a Switch 2 press event in New York. When asked if the availability of The Wind Waker on Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) would prevent a Switch 2 port of the Wii U's Wind Waker HD, Bihldorff was clear: "no, all options are on the table". This statement leaves room for hope that Wind Waker HD could still see a release on the Switch 2, though nothing has been confirmed yet.

First Released in 2002

Originally launched on the GameCube in 2002 in Japan and 2003 in the West, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker captured hearts with its unique cel-shaded graphics. A decade later, in 2013, Wind Waker HD brought the game to the Wii U with significant enhancements. These included a visual upgrade from 480p to HD, improved lighting, the addition of gyro controls for weapons, faster sailing speeds, and other gameplay tweaks. With the GameCube library now exclusive to the Switch 2, porting Wind Waker HD could provide original Switch owners with their only chance to experience this beloved title.

In other news, the Nintendo Switch Online classics game libraries are undergoing a rebranding to Nintendo Classics. As stated by Nintendo, "Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members will soon be able to play The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-ZERO GX, and SOULCALIBUR II on Nintendo Switch 2, with more games slated for future release." These titles will come with additional features such as a retro screen filter and widescreen gameplay options, enhancing the nostalgic experience for players.
