Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Dev Stamps Out Live Service Game Talk Amid Backlash to 'FOMO' Community Events

The developers of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 have addressed community concerns regarding recent in-game events perceived as promoting "fear of missing out" (FOMO). These events offered limited-time cosmetic items, a tactic often criticized for fostering unhealthy player engagement and potentially encouraging excessive spending in live-service games. While Space Marine 2 doesn't include loot boxes, the events sparked a backlash, leading some to label the game a "live service" title.

In response to this feedback, Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive clarified their intentions, stating they are not aiming to transform Space Marine 2 into a full live-service game. They acknowledged the negative reception to the events and assured players that all items previously available through these limited-time events will be made available to everyone later. The developers apologized for the inconvenience and are working on simplifying the process for unlocking these cosmetic items.

To demonstrate their commitment, Focus Entertainment is offering the Mk VIII Errant Helmet (previously only obtainable through the Imperial Vigil community event) for free to all players who link their PROS account to Space Marine 2. This event concludes on March 3rd.

The 7.0 update for Space Marine 2 is anticipated soon, introducing a new weapon, Operations map, and PvE Prestige Ranks. This follows earlier communication addressing player concerns about content updates and outlining the game's roadmap for the coming months. Space Marine 2 achieved remarkable success upon its release, becoming the fastest-selling Warhammer video game ever, surpassing 5 million copies sold.
