It appears that we may have gotten an early hint at the title of the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie due to a premature announcement in an NBCUniversal press release. The release, which was meant to highlight upcoming content for their Upfront Showcase, inadvertently included Super Mario World among the future films from Universal Pictures and Illumination set to stream on Peacock.
The mention of Super Mario World quickly spread across the internet, prompting Universal to swiftly edit the press release to remove any reference to Mario. This incident was captured and shared on social media by Wario64 on May 14, 2025, showcasing the before and after versions of the press release.
Interestingly, the initial paragraph listed Super Mario World alongside Shrek and Minions. Given that Shrek and Minions refer to Shrek 5 and Minions 3 respectively, it suggests that Super Mario World might be a placeholder or an umbrella term rather than the final title for the Mario sequel. However, Super Mario World being a more specific title than a generic Super Mario or Super Mario Bros. lends some credibility to its potential use.
