Joseph Kosinski is reportedly set to direct a new Miami Vice movie for Universal, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Nightcrawler writer-director Dan Gilroy is tasked with scripting the film, building on an initial draft penned by Top Gun: Maverick's Eric Warren Singer. Gilroy, who has recently contributed to multiple episodes of the Star Wars series Andor—created by his brother Tony—is bringing his unique storytelling prowess to this iconic franchise.
Miami Vice, the groundbreaking NBC police series, was created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann. Airing from 1984 to 1989, the show starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as detectives Crockett and Tubbs. Its innovative style redefined television, blending high fashion, music, and cinematic visuals into a culturally significant phenomenon.
The series was previously brought to the big screen in 2006 by Michael Mann, with Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell leading the cast.
While specific details about the new film remain sparse, it's clear that Miami Vice won't be Kosinski's immediate follow-up to his upcoming June release, F1. This gap in his schedule will allow Kosinski ample time to prepare and perfect his vision for the film, perhaps even deciding on the perfect Ferrari to feature in this stylish reboot.
