Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, is back in the game development scene, aiming to craft a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy VI. While he initially planned for Fantasian to be his final project before retirement, the positive experience working with his team has inspired him to embark on a new adventure.
A New Chapter Inspired by FFVI
Following the success of Fantasian Neo Dimension, a 2021 release enhanced and expanded upon in 2024, Sakaguchi revealed his desire to create a game reminiscent of Final Fantasy VI. He described the project as "a successor to Final Fantasy VI," and a continuation of his "farewell note," emphasizing the joy of collaborating with his talented team. This new game will aim to blend classic elements with fresh innovation.
Development Update and Speculation
In 2024, Sakaguchi confirmed the project's development, estimating approximately two years until a significant milestone is reached. A trademark filing for "FANTASIAN DARK AGE" by Mistwalker fueled speculation about a possible sequel, although nothing official has been announced. The new project will likely maintain the fantasy RPG style of his previous works.
Reunion with Square Enix
The collaboration with Square Enix for the multi-platform release of FANTASIAN Neo Dimension in December 2024 marked a full circle moment for Sakaguchi, who began his career at Square (now Square Enix). Despite this successful partnership, he remains focused on his new project and has no intention of revisiting the Final Fantasy franchise or other previous works. He now sees himself primarily as a gamer rather than a developer focused on the Final Fantasy series.
