Sony Removes PS3 Classics Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 from PS5, PS4 Amid PS Plus Overhaul

Next month, PlayStation Plus subscribers will see 22 games removed from their library, including major titles such as Grand Theft Auto 5, Payday 2: Crimewave Edition, and the final playable versions of Sony's first-party titles Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2. These games will be unavailable starting May 20, 2025.

PlayStation Plus is a comprehensive online gaming service for PlayStation platforms, offering monthly free games, limited-time trials, online multiplayer access, and exclusive member discounts. It also provides a catalog of hundreds of current and classic games for Extra and Premium members, enhancing their gaming experience with a vast selection of titles.

As reported by Push Square, the upcoming removal of these 22 games from the PlayStation Plus library includes two notable first-party PS3 games, Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2, which will no longer be accessible through the PS Plus Premium service.

The departure of Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 from the PS Plus Premium library is particularly significant because these titles are no longer available for purchase on the PS Store. This makes the streaming service the last resort for playing them on modern consoles, unless you own the games and a functional PS3. Both games were added to the library towards the end of 2024, and their removal less than a year later marks a notable change in Sony's content strategy.

The Resistance series, developed by Insomniac Games, consists of alternate history first-person shooters that followed the success of their Ratchet and Clank games. The franchise saw three releases on the PS3 before Insomniac shifted focus to other projects, including Marvel’s Spider-Man and new Ratchet and Clank titles.

While it is rare for Sony to remove first-party titles from PlayStation Plus, precedents exist, such as the unexpected removal of both Horizon games—Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon: Forbidden West—in August 2024. Unlike the Horizon games, which remained purchasable, Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 will become entirely inaccessible on modern consoles following their removal.

Notably, Resistance 3 and Resistance: Retribution will continue to be available on the service. Additionally, the PS4 game InFamous: Second Son is also slated to leave PS Plus.

Insomniac's Resistance series has been inactive for some time. In February, Insomniac founder and outgoing president Ted Price mentioned efforts to develop Resistance 4, which ultimately did not come to fruition. Like Guerrilla's Killzone series, Resistance has been sidelined in recent years.
