Sony is relaxing its PlayStation Network (PSN) account linking requirement for several PC games, starting with Marvel's Spider-Man 2. This means players will no longer need a PSN account to play titles like Marvel's Spider-Man 2, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, God of War Ragnarök, and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. The impact on other single-player PC ports remains unclear.
However, Sony is incentivizing PSN account linking with in-game bonuses. Connecting your account will unlock early suits in Marvel's Spider-Man 2, provide resource bundles for God of War Ragnarök (including early access to the Armor of the Black Bear), and offer additional perks in other games like The Last of Us Part II Remastered and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. Sony plans to expand these benefits across its PlayStation Studios titles. Connecting a PSN account also enables features like trophy support and friend management.
This shift follows criticism from PC gamers, particularly those in regions where PSN is unavailable, regarding the mandatory account linking for single-player games. This policy was previously reversed for Helldivers 2 after initial backlash. While Sony's PC game releases have been welcomed by many, the PSN requirement proved controversial. The company's decision to remove the requirement for select titles suggests a response to this feedback.
