We're all eagerly anticipating the sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, which, to everyone's disappointment, isn't slated for release until 2029. In the meantime, we can dream and theorize about what the next chapter will hold—and the singing voices behind the film's central K-pop girl group, HUNTR/X, are doing just that.
EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami have shared their hopes for the story's continuation. "More elements of traditional Korean culture—history, music, cuisine," EJAE, the singing voice for the film's lead character Rumi, explained in a recent Collider interview.
For Audrey Nuna, who provides the singing voice for Mira, the vision is global expansion. "I'd love to see the girls in different cities worldwide. I want to see the cultural influence they bring internationally, given the film's massive global reach," she told the publication. "The movie and real life have been in this fascinating dialogue, and I hope that continues."
Rei Ami, who sings for Zoey, had insightful suggestions for the sequel's direction. "I'd be thrilled to see an origin story of how the girls first formed the group," Ami shared in the interview. "If not a prequel, then I definitely want Gwi-Ma to return. Bring him back. Who will be the new villain? I'm incredibly curious about what comes next."
The origins of HUNTR/X are only briefly explored in KPop Demon Hunters, so delving deeper into their formative years would be a welcome move by filmmakers Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans. It would also be intriguing to see the return of the main antagonist, Gwi-Ma—perhaps with his minions causing trouble in another country, as Nuna hinted.
KPop Demon Hunters, Netflix's most-watched film ever with over 400 million views, is currently streaming on the platform in both its original cut and a singalong version. For those who haven't seen it, the Sony Pictures Animation film follows the Korean pop band HUNTR/X, a trio who secretly battle demons as they fight an evil demon king intent on consuming humanity. In our 8/10 review, we praised it as "a stunning animated action musical with spectacular fight choreography, catchy songs, and plenty of harmony and heart."
