Are you excited about Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie? The director, fresh off the success of Deadpool & Wolverine, is still at the helm of this much-anticipated project. Jonathan Tropper, the film's writer, recently shared an encouraging update with Screen Rant, expressing his excitement and hinting that the movie might hit the screens sooner than expected. "I am [excited] too," he said. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."
While the plot remains largely under wraps, we do know that the film is set to take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy provided some insight into its timeline during a February interview with Deadline. "That's also in the future," she stated. "It's all post-[the first] nine. Shawn's is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions the film as the first to delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker era.
In the same conversation, Kennedy also confirmed that Levy's movie will follow the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu in 2026. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she explained. Another exciting detail is that Ryan Gosling is reportedly set to star in the film.
With Tropper's optimistic update, it seems that things are moving forward for Levy's project. However, fans will need to exercise patience, as the film is not expected to be released until at least the last quarter of 2026, or possibly 2027.
It's been a while since Disney last released a Star Wars film—the critically panned Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Since then, several projects have been canceled, including a film from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Additionally, a Star Wars movie slated for late 2026 was recently removed from Disney's calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm announced three new feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set in his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which will see Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey post-The Rise of Skywalker.
The Obaid-Chinoy project has seen several changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently departing after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a key focus for Disney's future Star Wars projects, with reports indicating her appearance in multiple upcoming films.
And there's more on the horizon: X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy, which, contrary to initial reports, will not continue the Skywalker Saga.
The next Star Wars content to grace your screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple-episode launch. Stay tuned for more updates on these exciting developments in the Star Wars universe!
