The PlayStation Portal, Sony's innovative handheld gaming accessory designed for the PS5, resembles an extended DualSense controller with an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen. It transforms your PS5 into a portable gaming device, streaming games at up to 60fps. It retains all the hallmark features of the DualSense, such as haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a touchscreen interface in place of the traditional touchpad. While the Portal can stream games beyond your home, it requires a very stable and fast internet connection. It's important to note that the PS Portal is not a standalone device; it is strictly a remote player for the PlayStation 5, necessitating a PS5 for use.
Update: You no longer need a PS5 to play games on the PS Portal. Sony has now enabled the Portal to stream games directly from their PlayStation Now cloud service, broadening the device's capabilities. This feature allows you to access over 120 games, including titles like Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil 3 Remake, The Last of Us Part 1 Remastered, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, without owning a PS5. To utilize this, you must subscribe to the highest tier of PlayStation Plus, which at $18 a month, is a more cost-effective option compared to purchasing a PS5 and individual games.
While the PlayStation Portal offers a unique way to stream PS5 games, it's not the only option. You can achieve similar functionality by downloading the PS Remote Play app on various mobile devices, including gaming handhelds like the Steam Deck. However, setting this up can be more complex, and you'll miss out on some of the DualSense's unique features.
