Ryan Reynolds, known for his role as Deadpool, recently revealed on The Box Office Podcast that he pitched an R-rated Star Wars project to Disney. While it remains uncertain whether Disney has accepted the pitch or if it would materialize as a movie or TV show, Reynolds shared his vision for the project.
"I pitched to Disney, I said, 'Why don’t we do an R-rated Star Wars property?'" Reynolds explained. He emphasized that the R-rating wouldn't be about vulgarity but rather a means to explore deeper emotional narratives. "R-rated is a Trojan Horse for emotion, and I always wonder why studios don’t want to just gamble on something like that," he added.
Reynolds has a proven track record with R-rated films, having been involved in three of the top-five highest-grossing R-rated movies: Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Deadpool & Wolverine. The latter, a collaboration with Hugh Jackman, remains the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever, earning over $1.3 billion according to Box Office Mojo.
Despite his enthusiasm for the concept, Reynolds clarified that he wouldn't want to star in the project. "I’m not saying I would want to be in it; that would be a bad fit," he stated. Instead, he expressed interest in contributing behind the scenes as a producer or writer. He believes that such projects thrive on scarcity and surprise, elements he feels could still be achieved even with the extensive content available on Disney+.

While Reynolds continues his work with Marvel, including reportedly pushing for a Deadpool and X-Men movie, the realization of his R-rated Star Wars project seems distant. For those interested in Disney's ongoing Star Wars expansions, Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, is another project to keep an eye on, though details are currently scarce.
