The journey to this point began when the game was first teased in 2022, with alpha testing signups opening in late 2024 for a new survival game within the RuneScape universe. The official unveiling of RuneScape: Dragonwilds occurred on March 31, 2025, leading swiftly to its wishlist availability on Steam on April 1, and the gameplay teaser on April 2.

A highlight is the introduction of the Fellhollow region, a mystical land caught between life and death, governed by the soul-eater dragon Imaru. This region is influenced by the wild anima of Ashenfall and the cursed energy of the Underworld, with the iconic RuneScape character Death guiding players through new quests, lore, gear, and music. New skills in magic, ranged, and farming will also be added, along with new enemy types like Lesser Dragons, dragon slayer gear, and modes such as hardcore and creative. While specific dates for these updates remain undisclosed, Jagex assures continuous enhancements to the game.
