In the zombie-infested world of Project Zomboid, securing your shelter is paramount. While finding a safe haven is relatively straightforward, protecting it from the relentless undead hordes is a different beast entirely. This guide details how to create a fundamental, yet effective, defense: barricading your windows.
How to Secure Your Windows in Project Zomboid
To effectively barricade a window, you'll need a specific set of tools and materials: a wooden plank, a hammer, and four nails. Once gathered, simply right-click the target window. Your character will automatically begin securing the plank, reinforcing the window. Each window supports up to four planks for maximum protection.
Hammers and nails are typically found in locations you'd expect—toolboxes, garages, sheds, and closets. Wooden planks are commonly located at construction sites, or, in a pinch, can be salvaged by dismantling wooden furniture like shelves or chairs. Admin players can utilize the "/additem" command to spawn these items.
Barricaded windows offer significantly improved protection against zombie breaches compared to standard glass panes. The more planks applied, the longer it takes for zombies to break through. To remove planks, right-click the boards and select "Remove." Note that you'll need either a claw hammer or a crowbar to perform this action.
It's important to note that large furniture items (bookshelves, refrigerators, etc.) are ineffective as window barriers. Characters and zombies will pass right through them. However, learning how to move furniture remains a valuable skill for interior design purposes.
For even stronger defenses, consider metal bars or sheets, but this requires sufficient Metalworking skill.
