Pocketpair, the developer embroiled in a legal battle over its Palworld game, has unexpectedly released its 2019 title, OverDungeon, on the Nintendo eShop. This surprise launch follows a lawsuit filed by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company in September 2024, alleging patent infringement related to Palworld's Pal Spheres.
OverDungeon, a unique blend of action card game, tower defense, and roguelike elements, initially debuted on Steam in 2019. Its Nintendo Switch release marks Pocketpair's first foray onto the platform and was accompanied by a celebratory 50% discount, valid until January 24th. The decision to launch OverDungeon on the Nintendo eShop, while Palworld is available on other consoles, has sparked speculation online, with some suggesting it's a strategic response to the ongoing legal proceedings.
This isn't Pocketpair's first brush with comparisons to Nintendo titles. Their 2020 release, Craftopia, drew parallels to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Despite the lawsuit, Pocketpair continues to actively support both Palworld (with a recent December update and a planned Terraria crossover extending into 2025) and Craftopia. Future plans for Palworld include a Mac port and a potential mobile version.
The legal dispute between Pocketpair, Nintendo, and The Pokémon Company remains ongoing, with patent experts predicting a potentially lengthy process. The release of OverDungeon adds another layer of complexity to the situation, prompting further questions about the company's strategy and the future of both Palworld and its other titles.
