Sega's iconic arcade racing game, OutRun, is gearing up for an unexpected cinematic journey, with none other than Michael Bay set to direct and produce. The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Universal Pictures has tapped the Transformers director for the project, with actress Sydney Sweeney also on board as a producer. Jayson Rothwell has been enlisted to pen the screenplay, though details about the plot remain under wraps, and no release date has been announced yet.
On the Sega front, Toru Nakahara, a key figure in the Sonic movies, will serve as a producer, while Sega America and Europe CEO Shuji Utsumi will oversee the film's production. OutRun, which first hit arcades in 1986, was designed by the legendary Sega developer Yu Suzuki. Known for its stunning graphics, the game has seen various versions and ports over the years, with a notable sequel released in 2003. The most recent iteration, OutRun Online Arcade, came out in 2009, developed by Sumo Digital.
Sega has been actively mining its rich catalog for new projects, with upcoming titles including Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Virtua Fighter, and Shinobi. The company has also successfully ventured into adaptations of its intellectual properties. The Sonic movies have achieved significant popularity, and last year saw the launch of Like a Dragon: Yakuza on Amazon. The appetite for video game films in Hollywood remains strong, as evidenced by the record-breaking success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the recent release of A Minecraft Movie.
As for the OutRun movie, fans might speculate that Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney could be envisioning a thrilling, Fast & Furious-style action and driving spectacle.
