Nintendo hints that a new 3D Mario title could be revealed soon, though fans will need to remain patient for an official unveiling.
In a recent CNN interview, Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser responded to fans eager for a new mainline Mario installment. While he didn't explicitly confirm a sequel to Super Mario Odyssey is in development, his remarks suggest news may not be far off.
"Stay tuned," Bowser said. "We have an extensive catalog and a long list of intellectual properties that will surely make their way to the platform."
Bowser's statement is not a direct announcement, but it offers some reassurance to those surprised by the absence of a new Mario game in the Nintendo Switch 2 launch lineup. When Nintendo revealed its next-generation hybrid console earlier this month, it highlighted titles like Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World, yet no traditional 3D Mario platformer was shown.
The last flagship Mario game, Super Mario Odyssey, launched in October 2017, shortly after the original Switch's release. This means it has been nearly eight years since a major Mario title arrived. While games like Donkey Kong Bananza may temporarily satisfy players, they aren't the Super Mario Odyssey sequel many have been anticipating. Still, Mario remains a cornerstone of Nintendo's extensive IP portfolio, making the eventual reveal of a new 3D Mario adventure seem all but inevitable.
For now, a new mainline Mario adventure has yet to be revealed. While we wait for updates, you can check out Nintendo’s updated Switch 2 pre-order schedule here ahead of the console’s launch come June 5, 2025.
