Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater launches in mere weeks, though fans will need to exercise patience for Fox Hunt - the game's online multiplayer component.
While the single-player campaign arrives on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on August 28, Fox Hunt will be introduced through a post-launch update this "fall." Publisher Konami hasn't provided more specific timing beyond this seasonal window.
First revealed in June, Fox Hunt represents a brand-new multiplayer experience distinct from Metal Gear Online, which launched alongside Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots in 2008. The original MGO service operated for four years before servers were discontinued in 2012.
"Fox Hunt is an entirely original online multiplayer mode," explained veteran Metal Gear Solid developer Yu Sahara, now serving as the mode's director. "While it exists in the same universe as Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, the gameplay stands completely apart."
"Many fans associate Metal Gear multiplayer with Metal Gear Online, but Fox Hunt represents an entirely new concept. We deeply value our longstanding MGO community, but the multiplayer gaming landscape has evolved significantly since then. Determining what a fresh online experience should look like required extensive deliberation."
Sahara elaborated that Fox Hunt would emphasize the series' signature stealth and survival mechanics, pushing "camouflage and hide-and-seek gameplay to new heights" to deliver more than just standard shooter combat.
Beyond the multiplayer component, Delta serves as a ground-up remake of the 2004 masterpiece Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Notably, series creator Hideo Kojima has publicly stated he won't be playing the remake.
