While some communities, such as the fans of Tomodachi Life, are reveling in excitement following today's Nintendo Direct, others are not faring as well. Specifically, the Hollow Knight: Silksong community is once again donning their metaphorical clown makeup after no new trailer for the highly anticipated sequel appeared during the showcase.
Fortunately, there's another opportunity next week. The anticipation and disappointment within the Silksong community have been palpable for quite some time. A visit to their subreddit or community Discord reveals a continuous stream of memes and "silkposts" that fantasize, predict, and humorously comment on a game that seems perpetually on the horizon. We previously reported on their reactions last year during back-to-back Directs and again in January when a seemingly innocuous photo of chocolate cake sparked a wild goose chase for an alternate reality game (ARG) that never materialized. At this point, it's challenging to discern from an outsider's perspective whether the community's reactions stem from genuine disappointment or if it's just a close-knit group of fans enjoying the rollercoaster of emotions with each new showcase announcement.
However, the upcoming showcase carries a bit more weight. Hollow Knight initially launched on PC but truly gained fame with its release on the Nintendo Switch the following year, leading many to closely associate the game with Nintendo's platform. The next showcase is particularly significant as it's a Nintendo Direct focused on unveiling the Nintendo Switch 2, showcasing both the hardware and potential launch titles. This setting seems like the perfect stage for Silksong to make a grand reappearance. While the event will undoubtedly feature numerous first-party titles, Hollow Knight fans are clinging to the hope that Silksong's popularity and anticipation will secure it a spot in such a major showcase, and more importantly, that the game is finally ready for release.
Are Silksong fans poised for yet another disappointment, perhaps the 50th since the game's announcement? It's likely, but there are some signs that a release date announcement might be on the horizon. A recent Xbox Wire post on indie games made a passing reference to Silksong, though it could have been a playful tease. More intriguingly, recent backend changes to the game's Steam listing, including an updated copyright year, have been noted. However, the community has been through numerous cycles of overhyping due to random listings and delistings on various console storefronts, so it's hard to predict with certainty.
The only concrete information we have comes from Team Cherry's marketing and publishing chief, Matthew 'Leth' Griffin, who stated in January after the cake incident, "Yes the game is real, progressing, and will release." All we can do now is wait and dream of what life will be like in a post-Silksong world.
So, get your clown makeup ready for next week, folks!
