Helldivers 2 Director Takes Sabbatical After 11 Years, to Work on Arrowhead's Next Game

Author : Jacob Update:Apr 17,2025

Helldivers 2's creative director, Johan Pilestedt, has announced that he is taking a sabbatical leave after dedicating 11 years to the Helldivers franchise. Starting with the original Helldivers in 2013 and continuing with Helldivers 2 since early 2016, Pilestedt has worked tirelessly on the series. In a heartfelt tweet, he expressed that this intense focus on the intellectual property had led him to neglect his family, friends, and personal well-being. He plans to use his sabbatical to reconnect with those he has set aside over the years.

Pilestedt reassured fans that Arrowhead Studios will continue to support and enhance Helldivers 2 in his absence. Upon his return, he will shift his focus to Arrowhead's next project, which remains under wraps for now.

Helldivers 2 made headlines following its explosive launch in February 2024, becoming PlayStation Studios' fastest-selling game ever, with 12 million copies sold in just 12 weeks. Its success has led Sony to adapt it into a movie. Pilestedt became the public face of the game, actively engaging with the community across various platforms, including social media, Reddit, and Discord. However, the game's success also brought challenges, with an increase in community toxicity and threats towards the studio's staff, a new issue for Arrowhead to manage.

The launch of Helldivers 2 was marred by significant server issues, leading to initial backlash. Subsequent complaints ranged from weapon balance to the value of Premium Warbonds. The most significant controversy arose from Sony's decision to require PC players to link their accounts to PlayStation Network, a move that was later reversed after intense community backlash and review-bombing on Steam.

Amidst these challenges, Pilestedt transitioned from CEO to chief creative officer at Arrowhead to focus more on game development and community engagement. Shams Jorjani, formerly of Paradox and publisher of Magicka, took over as CEO.

While details about Arrowhead's next game are scarce, the studio continues to update Helldivers 2, recently adding the third enemy faction, the Illuminate, to keep the game fresh and engaging.
