Variety reports that Guy Ritchie is set to direct the sequel to Amazon MGM's 2024 Road House remake. Jake Gyllenhaal will reprise his leading role as ex-UFC fighter turned bouncer Elwood Dalton.
Plans for a sequel starring Gyllenhaal were first confirmed in May of last year, following the remake's successful debut in March 2024. The film garnered over 50 million views during its first two weekends on Prime Video, making it Amazon MGM Studios' most-watched original film premiere globally at that time.
The 2024 Road House was directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow, Swingers), but Liman quickly became an unlikely candidate to return for the sequel after publicly criticizing the decision to release the film on a streaming platform.
"My concern with Road House is that we made the movie for MGM with the intention of a theatrical release. Everyone was compensated accordingly, but then Amazon changed the plan, and no one received additional payment," Liman stated at the time. "Beyond the industry impact—50 million people watched Road House—I didn't earn a cent, Jake Gyllenhaal didn't earn a cent, [producer] Joel Silver didn't earn a cent. That isn't right."
According to Gyllenhaal, however, Amazon had been transparent from the start that Road House was always intended for streaming.
Road House 2 will be the third collaboration between Ritchie and Gyllenhaal, and their second project for Amazon MGM following the critically praised 2023 war film Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant, despite its somewhat clunky title. The duo is also working on the upcoming action thriller In the Grey, which co-stars Henry Cavill, though a release date has not yet been announced.
Additional details about Road House 2 are still limited, but the screenplay is being written by Will Beall (Gangster Squad, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F).
Guy Ritchie shows no signs of slowing down. The director recently oversaw multiple episodes of the new Paramount+ series MobLand (featuring Tom Hardy), and his next film, Fountain of Youth, is scheduled to premiere on Apple TV+ later this month.
