Guillermo del Toro's passion for Frankenstein might rival that of Dr. Frankenstein himself. At the recent Next on Netflix preview event, the acclaimed writer-director shared a video message, teasing his long-anticipated adaptation of the classic tale. Although a trailer won't be released until this summer, Netflix treated fans to a first-look image of Oscar Isaac embodying the iconic mad scientist.
"This film has been on my mind since I was a child — for 50 years," del Toro revealed in the video, as reported by Variety. "I’ve been trying to make it for 20 to 25 years. In fact, some people may even think I am a little bit obsessed with Frankenstein." As he spoke, he gestured towards the array of Frankenstein figures and collectibles in his famous Bleak House's Frankenstein room.
Del Toro also showcased some exclusive footage, featuring Oscar Isaac's Victor Frankenstein confronting Mia Goth, who plays a seemingly affluent aristocrat. Additionally, Jacob Elordi was seen as Frankenstein’s monster, characterized by long black hair, stitched-up gray skin, and a striking red glint in his eyes. However, this footage is not currently available online.
"You see, over the decades, the character has fused with my soul in a way that it has become an autobiography," del Toro expressed. "It doesn’t get more personal than this."
The director, known for films like Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy, has indeed been working tirelessly to bring Frankenstein to life for an extended period. Let's delve into the journey of Netflix's upcoming Frankenstein movie, a project that has been years in the making.
