Minor spoilers ahead for A Minecraft Movie.
The team behind A Minecraft Movie told IGN that one of the funniest moments in the video game adaptation was inspired by The NeverEnding Story.
There’s a scene in A Minecraft Movie where Jack Black’s Steve has to ride on Jason Momoa’s Garrett because there were only enough Elytra wings for Garrett and Sebastian Hansen’s Henry. It’s a hilarious physical comedy sequence as Steve scrambles all over Garrett to avoid plummeting hundreds of feet to the ground—and it turned out to be much more than just a joke.
"We definitely wanted a Falkor moment from The NeverEnding Story—something majestic and beautiful, but one that quickly goes off the rails," A Minecraft Movie director Jared Hess said."It was hilarious between takes when they cut," producer Torfi Frans Ólafsson added. "Jack was perched on top of Jason in this elaborate rig... and he started singing the lyrics to The NeverEnding Story, pretending he was riding Falkor."
It’s a clever nod, since Jack Black actually played Slip in The NeverEnding Story 3. And for Momoa, it was a thrill because he played a key role in bringing the scene to life.
"I got to help write that scene, and this big guy [Jack Black] wanted to do it too," Momoa shared with a laugh. "This was after Top Gun: Maverick came out, so I was eager to jump in, hit the brakes, and have us slide down—I’d switch positions on him. We were sitting in the hotel cracking up about this idea of Jack and me doing this stunt, and it ended up in the movie—and it’s amazing."
"I’m not sure if it made the final cut because there were different versions of that scene, but it could’ve gone full R-rated," Jack Black noted. "In the end, I think we kept it family-friendly!"

Momoa also hilariously reenacted the two of them on set (watch the video to see it for yourself!).
"Let my hips guide you! You can’t just ride me like I’m majestic," Momoa said. "I was dying, man. I was dying."
