Exciting news for fans of the iconic franchise: a live-action Power Rangers series is reportedly in the works for Disney+. According to The Wrap, the showrunners behind the successful Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, are in discussions to helm this new adaptation. They're set to write, showrun, and produce the series in collaboration with 20th Century TV.
Hasbro, the current owner of the Power Rangers franchise, is keen on reimagining the beloved series to captivate a new generation while retaining the loyalty of existing fans. This move reflects Hasbro's vision to expand the brand's reach and appeal across various media platforms.
The '90s TV phenomenon, The Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, became a staple for kids worldwide, inspiring awe with its teenage superheroes and their formidable mechs. These mechs could combine into a colossal machine, a spectacle that captured the imagination of an entire generation.
In 2018, Hasbro solidified its commitment to the franchise by acquiring Power Rangers and other brands from Saban Properties for a hefty $522 million. Brian Goldner, Hasbro's chairman and CEO at the time, expressed enthusiasm about the brand's potential, stating, "We see significant opportunity for Power Rangers across our entire Brand Blueprint, including toys and games, consumer products, digital gaming and entertainment, as well as geographically throughout our global retail footprint."
This acquisition followed the 2017 movie reboot, which attempted a darker, grittier take on the Power Rangers universe. Despite hopes of launching a series of sequels, the film's disappointing box office led to the cancellation of those plans and prompted Saban to sell the rights to Hasbro.
Hasbro's ambitions extend beyond Power Rangers. They are also developing other high-profile projects such as The Forgotten Realms, a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series for Netflix, an animated Magic: The Gathering series, also at Netflix, and a cinematic universe based on Magic: The Gathering.
