Street Fighter Live-Action Film Gets New Director

A fresh contender has entered the cinematic arena for the Street Fighter adaptation. Hollywood confirms Kitao Sakurai, known for his work on the surreal comedy series The Eric Andre Show, will direct Legendary Entertainment's upcoming Street Fighter film.

The project, scheduled for March 20, 2026, reportedly enjoys significant creative involvement from Capcom, the franchise's original creators.

PlayThis marks Hollywood's latest attempt at adapting the legendary fighting game franchise, though none can surpass the cult status of the 1994 version featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile and Raul Julia's iconic portrayal of M. Bison - a beloved classic despite its initial critical reception.

While casting details remain undisclosed, fans can anticipate seeing their favorite World Warriors represented in the new adaptation. The production previously had the Philippou brothers (Talk to Me) attached before their 2023 departure.

Sakurai's unexpected involvement suggests Legendary might be embracing the franchise's more exaggerated, comedic elements - a potentially exciting direction for fans who appreciate Street Fighter's colorful personality. Coincidentally, Capcom's latest installment Street Fighter 6 just welcomed Mai Shiranui to its roster.
