Hollow Knight Fans’ Hope for Silksong Reignited
By a Twitter Post and a Piece of Cake
The Hollow Knight community has once again been thrown into a frenzy of speculation following intriguing social media activity by one of the game's creators, William Pellen, just before and during the Switch 2 reveal on January 16, 2025.
On January 15, Pellen teased fans on Twitter (X) with a cryptic message: "something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow." This was likely a nod to the anticipated Switch 2 announcement on January 16. Naturally, this sparked questions about Silksong's release, but Pellen's subsequent actions only intensified the speculation.
On the day of the Switch 2 announcement, January 16, 2025, which also revealed a direct release scheduled for April 2, 2025, fans noticed that Pellen had changed his profile picture to a slice of cake. A reverse image search revealed that the image came from a Bon Appetit article about the Brooklyn Blackout Cake, published on April 2, 2024.
Pellen's comment on the article, "mmmm tasty," further fueled the speculation. Dedicated fans delved into the comments, where discussions about Silksong were intertwined with cake reviews. One fan boldly stated, "if we get real silksong news by April 2nd 2025, I will bake this cake." Another fan remarked on the cake's "silky texture," cleverly linking it to the game and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 Direct.
It's worth noting that there's no definitive proof that Pellen was the one commenting on the cake recipe article. However, his change of profile picture on Twitter (X) is undeniable, suggesting he might be hinting at something—yet, it could also be nothing at all.
Hollow Knight: Silksong’s Official Announcement Five Years Ago
Hollow Knight: Silksong was first announced on February 14, 2019, with plans for release on platforms including Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. As a sequel to the acclaimed Hollow Knight, Silksong follows the adventures of Hornet in a new kingdom ruled by silk and song.
In December 2019, Team Cherry provided a glimpse into Hollow Knight's soundtrack, crafted by Christopher Larkin. Following this, the development team remained silent for over two years.
The silence was broken in February 2022 when Pellen reassured fans that the game was still being developed. He promised that more information would be shared as the release approached. By June of the same year, during the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase, Team Cherry released a new trailer with fresh gameplay footage, confirming that Silksong would be available on Game Pass upon launch.
Although an initial release was anticipated for 2023, Team Cherry's representative Matthew Griffin announced a delay in May 2023, stating, "We had planned to release in the 1st half of 2023, but development is still continuing. We're excited by how the game is shaping up, and it's gotten quite big, so we want to take the time to make the game as good as we can."
More than five years after its announcement, the Hollow Knight fanbase remains fervent, actively engaging in community forums and eagerly seeking any updates on Silksong. However, aside from the delay announcement, little has been revealed about the game's progress, leaving fans in suspense.
