Amazon to shutter its app store on Android after more than ten years on mobile

Amazon is shutting down its Android app store on August 20th, 2024. This affects Android users; however, the app store will remain available on Fire TV and Fire Tablets. Launched in 2011, the Amazon Appstore's closure comes as a surprise to many developers and users.

While apps installed from the Amazon Appstore may remain functional, future updates and support are not guaranteed. This is confirmed on Amazon's support page dedicated to this announcement.

The timing is somewhat ironic, coinciding with the rise of alternative app stores. Amazon's Appstore never achieved widespread popularity, likely due to a lack of compelling features to attract users. Competitors like the Epic Games Store, with its free games program, offer significant advantages.
