The primary objective of Koi-Koi is to outpace your opponent by forming combinations of cards, known as "yaku," more quickly. The term "koi-koi," translating to "come on" in Japanese, is exclaimed by players who choose to continue their turn in hopes of creating more yaku for higher scores. The game revolves around accumulating cards in a point pile, which players can achieve by matching cards from their hand or the draw pile with those on the table.

Once a yaku is formed, players face a crucial decision: they can either stop the round to secure their points or opt for "koi-koi" to pursue additional yaku and potentially earn more points. It's important to note that while individual cards carry point values, these do not directly contribute to the final score but are instrumental in assessing their worth in forming yaku. This strategic element adds depth to the game, making every decision pivotal to the outcome.
