Togyz-Qumalaq, known as “The Game of Nine Holes” in its traditional form, is one of the oldest known board games in Central Asia, with archaeological evidence tracing its roots back to around 2000 BCE—over 4,000 years ago. Discovered in burial mounds across the Kazakh steppes and along ancient Silk Road trade routes, the game reflects the deep strategic thinking and spiritual worldview of the nomadic peoples of the Eurasian Steppe.

The game's name derives from "Togyz" (nine), referring to the nine holes on the board, and "Qumalaq" (the "plow" or "the one who plows"), symbolizing the movement of the player’s pieces across the land like a farmer tilling the soil—representing both agriculture and warfare.

Togyz-Qumalaq was not only a pastime but a ritualized form of conflict resolution, a tool for teaching leadership, foresight, and tactical patience. It was played by warriors, elders, and even shamans during seasonal gatherings, often accompanied by poetry, music, and storytelling.

• Players: 2
• Board: 19 holes (9 on each side, 1 central "Tuzdyq" hole)
• Pieces: 81 playing stones (45 "Togyz" and 36 "Qumalaq"), traditionally made from bone, wood, or stone
• Objective: Capture more stones than your opponent, or control key positions through strategic placement and movement.

The game unfolds in two phases:

1. Placement Phase – Players alternately place their stones on the board.
2. Movement & Capture Phase – Players move stones in sequence, capturing opponent’s pieces by surrounding them.

The most iconic element: Tuzdyq (The Central Hole) – a sacred space where special rules apply. Capturing in or near Tuzdyq often grants powerful advantages.
